Falcated Duck - Anas falcata

On Wednesday 22 January 1992 Ferdy Hierselaar found a male Falcated Duck Anas falcata in the Oranjekom (an artificial lake) in the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen NH, west of Haarlem. The bird stayed between Wigeons A penelope and Gadwalls A strepera and was seen there till 28 January (I saw it on Saturday 25 January), but re-appeared between 16 March to 18 April. Then it re-appeared for at least four consecutive winters and stayed sometimes into June.

This male was accepted as the first record for the Netherlands. Three records before this date (1983, 1985 and 1991), however, were rejected because of suspicious behaviour (cf Dutch Birding 14 (2): 63, 1992). Up till 2005, there are nine records, with no less then four records in 1992, one in 1994/95, on in 2002, one in 2003/2004 and two in 2005.
