2008

Already in February I could add a new species to my Dutch List! On 10 February a Eurasian Pygmy Owl Glaucidium passerinum was discovered in the Leenderbos, a forest south of Valkenswaard in the province of Noord-Brabant. I was happy enough to see the bird on the next day 11 February. The next day it was gone.
Also in February was the re-appearance of Tengmalm's Owl Aegolius funereus in the province of Drenthe, the former traditional location of this species in the Seventies and Eighties of the previous century, making a lot of birders happy.
The rest of 2008 was not very exciting. An Eurasian Scops Owl Otus scops at Noordwijk was present for a few weeks and I was able to see it shortly, a new sighting-species, as the 1998 was a hear-only.
Finally, a Snowy Owl Bubo scandiacus on Texel at the end of November made 2008 as a very good owl year.
