Upland Sandpiper - Bartramia longicauda
On Saturday October 28th 1995 at the Maasvlakte (Zuid-Holland) two birders, Hans Mom and Dave van der Spoel, discovered at 10:15 AM a sandpiper, which they recognised as an Upland Sandpiper Bartramia longicauda. They quickly warned some birders, but the bird made a brief appearance at 12:00 AM. The usual crowd gathered within hours and at 2:00 PM the bird was found again (I saw it too then). It was then observed for a short time at regular intervals, disappearing at 3:15 PM. The story goes the photographers came to close, others belief a Common Kestrel Falco tinnunculus chased it away. Anyway, the bird was never to be seen again.

This was the first record for the Netherlands (cf Dutch Birding 17: 228, 1995) as two old records (before 1820 and September 1953) were rejected after review (cf Limosa 58: 65-72, 1985).
