Buff-breasted Sandpiper - Calidris subruficollis

On Saturday 12 June 1993 Paul Knolle and Bernadette Balten were leading an excursion with the Twentse Vogelwerkgroep to the Lauwersmeer, in the northern part of the Netherlands. At the Bandpolder, the location were in 1991 the first and only Sandhill Crane for the Netherlands was seen, they discovered a wader which they eventually identified as a Buff-breasted Sandpiper Calidris subruficollis, the eighth record for the Netherlands and the second record in spring. The bird, an adult, stayed in the area till 17 June and was seen by a lot of birders including me as I was on a holiday in Egypt when the first twitchable was seen in 1986 (cf Dutch Birding 15 (3): 144, 1993, DB 15 (5): 218-220, 1993).

At that time it was the eighth record for the Netherlands. Until 2000 there were 14 records, in 1955 (2), 1960, 1985, 1986 (2), 1998, 1993 (this record), 1994, 1998, 1999 (2) and 2000 (cf van den Berg & Bosman 2001: 153-154).
